You are very famous, but please introduce yourself for Koreans who don't know much about mainland American football
Chung: My name is Eugene Chung. All American Football player from Virginia Tech. Drafted 1st round by the New England Patriots. I have been coaching football the last 15 years at all levels including 9 years in the NFL

 

What made you start playing football?
Chung: I started playing in High School. I was always interested in sports. I really enjoyed the team aspects of playing sports. I also was tired of the cello and piano lessons.

 

Do you still enjoy piano and cello?
Chung: No not an artist by any means. I’ll still play the piano occasionally when I have time. You know as a coach there isn’t much free time

What kind of music do you usually play?
Chung: I was classically taught. Beethoven my favorite. I’ll learn popular songs and play around

 

When do you think is the decisive moment when you decide to play football?
Chung: It was the summer before my freshman year of high school.

What happened in the summer before the first grade of high school? And You did a great job as a high school and university player. I know that you especially stood out as a leader. What do you think your teammates were attracted to?
Chung: All my friend were going to play also. I thought it would be fun to play a new sport.
I think my teammates followed by example. I lead by example also I treated everyone the same. Whether you were a starter or second string

For example, can you tell me one specific thing?
Chung: Going through certain challenges in life builds character and leadership. Being consistent win or lose. The players will trust you. You must build trust to become a great leader

What do you think about leadership? What is it?
Chung: Building trust among the coaches and players. That is the key of building a championship team

I wonder how to communicate with the players. Do you have your own special way?
Chung: Being consistent is key

how much time do I have today?
Chung: Well maybe I can come and teach a clinic to everyone. I would be interested. I was scheduled to go to Mexico for a seminar/ clinic In July

The jersey number is 69. Does the number have any special meaning?
Chung: I was born in 1969 so I felt that number represented the birth of my football career.

Who comes to mind when you think of the word ‘football’?
Chung: The word ‘football” means to me the ultimate team sport. 11 athletes working together in sync to achieve the same goal. 

You are currently a coaching. How are football as a player different from football as a coach?
Chung: The difference between players and coaches? The coach is the teacher and the player the student. Each player learns differently so as a coach you have to adjust how you coach in certain situations.

What is your special habit that you have built in your life?
Chung: Attention to detail. Every little aspect of football must be detailed to the finest detail. That eliminates error. 

 

Your son is playing football, too. What is the most frequent conversation you have with your son?
Chung : After every game we talk about the game plan. How he performed and how he can get better

You said you wanted to help Korean sports. I'd like to hear your specific thoughts.
Chung: Specific fundamentals of football must be taught to produce a successful team and sport. Motivating kids to try their best. Information is the most important part of making sports successful

아직 피아노와 첼로 연주를 즐기시나요?
Chung: 아티스트는 아니지만 시간이 날 때 가끔 피아노를 치려고 합니다. 코치로서 자유 시간이 많지 않다는 거 아시죠?

주로 어떤 음악을 즐기시나요?
Chung: 클래식 위주로 수업을 받았습니다. 베토벤을 가장 좋아합니다. 이제 대중가요를 배우고 놀 것입니다.

미식축구를 해야겠다는 결정적인 순간은 언제인가요?
Chung: 고등학교 1학년을 앞둔 여름이었습니다.

 

고등학교 1학년 전 여름에 무슨 일이 일어났던 겁니까? 그리고 고등학교와 대학교에서 선수로서 훌륭하게 보내셨습니다. 리더로서 특히 돋보였다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 팀원들이 당신의 어떤 점에 매력을 느꼈다고 생각하십니까?
Chung: 당시 내 친구들도 모두 미식축구를 하려고 했습니다. 새로운 운동을 하면 재미있을 것 같았습니다. 
동료들이 모범을 보고 따라왔던 것 같습니다. 나는 모범으로 이끌었습니다. 그리고 나는 선발이든 2군이든 모두 똑같이.모두를 똑같이 대했습니다. 

한 가지 구체적인 예를 든다면요?
Chung: 인생에서 어떤 도전을 겪으면 인성과 리더십이 길러집니다. 이기든 지든 일관성을 가지세요. 선수들이 당신을 믿을겁니다. 훌륭한 지도자가 되기 위해서는 신뢰를 쌓아야 합니다.

리더십이란 무엇이라고 생각하십니까?
Chung: 코치들과 선수들 사이에 신뢰를 쌓는 것입니다. 그것이 챔피언쉽 팀을 만드는 열쇠입니다.

 

선수들과의 소통에서 당신만의 특별한 방법이 있나요?
Chung: 일관성이 핵심입니다.

Chung: 선수와 코치의 차이? 코치는 선생님이고 선수는 학생입다. 선수마다 배우는 것이 다르기 때문에 코치로서 특정 상황에서 코치하는 방법을 조정해야 합니다.

당신만의 특별한 습관이 있나요?
Chung: 디테일에 집중합니다. 그것은 오류를 없앱니다.

당신의 아들도 미식축구 선수입니다. 주로 어떤 대화를 나누는지 궁금합니다.
